Your long-lasting kitchen, which has been in service for many years, is comfortable and familiar, where every detail has its place. But time passes, and the moment for change comes. Updating the kitchen space does not necessarily mean getting rid of your favorite furniture and spending large sums on new sets. Rethinking the interior also does not require changing habits and searching for lost things again.
We offer you a more affordable and economical way: to refresh your old kitchen furniture.
Furniture painting
The word "paint" may conjure up images of your grandmother's furniture, the smell of paint, uneven brush strokes, and hairs stuck to the surface. However, one look at modern painted kitchen cabinetry will change your mind.
For painting kitchen furniture You will need the following materials and tools:
- A screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver or a flat-head screwdriver;
- Sanding paper;
- Old paint remover;
- Furniture paint chosen to suit your shade and finish preferences;
- Brushes or rollers for applying paint;
- Mask and goggles to protect breathing and eyes;
- Polyethylene films or newspapers to protect surrounding surfaces from paint splashes;
- Primer for better adhesion of paint to the surface;
- Ventilation to ensure good air circulation during painting.
Before starting work, you must also make sure that the furniture is clean, dry and free of any defects such as cracks or chips.
- Using a screwdriver, remove all the facades that are subject to renovation. Empty them of their contents, including shelves (if you plan to paint the interior surface). Unscrew the hinges and put them aside if you do not plan to replace the fittings (which will also help to avoid squeaking when opening the doors). Remove the handles, and replacing them with new ones will also contribute to the kitchen's renovation.
- Before applying paint, thoroughly clean the surface from the old coating with sandpaper. Pay special attention to removing grease and make sure that there are no missed areas or drops on the surface, as they will stand out after painting. To clean old paint, you can use solvent and a soft cloth, working with gloves.
- Remove any remaining sanding residue very carefully. Then apply a quality primer to the surface - this is key, as the primer hides imperfections and provides an even and reliable paint coating. It is important that the primer covers every millimetre. Work carefully, avoiding dripping, as this may affect the quality of further application of paint to the kitchen furniture. Give the primer enough time to dry, do not rush with the application of paint. The drying time of the primer is usually indicated on the packaging.
If necessary, apply a second coat of primer to achieve a perfectly smooth, defect-free surface. If you are sure that the first coat has completely covered all the imperfections, you can skip this step. Then leave the furniture to dry completely before the next step.
- Priming is done before painting to improve the adhesion of the paint to the surface, create a barrier to protect against corrosion, and ensure uniform paint absorption. Sanding the primer before painting is done to remove surface irregularities and minor defects, create a smoother base for painting, and ensure a better appearance of the final coating. This process also helps to achieve a more durable and high-quality coating.
- We start painting after all the preparatory manipulations have been done. Particular attention should be paid to the choice of paint, since not all of them are suitable for kitchen furniture. Before starting work, it is worth consulting with sellers and studying the information on the manufacturer's website. These steps will justify themselves, given the changing conditions of the kitchen, where the temperature and humidity are constantly changing. To achieve the best result, it is recommended to apply at least two layers of paint. Remember that each layer must dry completely before applying the next. Apply the paint layer by layer, with a brush or roller.
- Install new hinges and handles, then secure all doors in place.
